Drakenstein Lion Park situated on 7.5 hectares of ground, in the beautiful Winelands, only 30 minutes from Cape Town.
It is not your average "lion reserve", but a haven for captive-born lions that can never be reintroduced back into the wild. Drakenstein Lion Park is one of a dedicated handful of parks that opposes the hunting of captive born lion and does everything in its power acquire lions destined for hunting farms, and provide these animals with a safe haven.
The Park currently houses thirteen lion. The animals at the Park are assured a chance of living out their natural lives in an enriched environment. As the park is not involved in the breeding of and the trade in lions, its sole source of funding is the nominal admission fee charged, and hence relies heavily on public support. One can stroll through the park at your leisure and view these magnificent beasts at eye level or get a bird's eye view from one of the raised viewing platforms. As lions naturally spend a great deal of time just lying down in the shade, there might not be that much activity to be seen for the kids. So a good recommendation would be to time your visit to coincide with the lions feeding times, which are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 16:00. There is a Refreshment Center and Curio Shop, where you can read up on each named lion, and whose photo graces the walls.
